Bio-Ontologies 2010: Semantic Applications in Life Sciences
Held on 10 July 2010 in conjunction with the International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB-2010), Boston, 9-13 July 2010. Simon Jupp, Julie Klein, Joost Schanstra and Robert Stevens described their work on the KUP Ontology in a presentation entitled "Developing a Kidney and Urinary Pathway Knowledge Base".
e-Lico Project Meeting and Extension Kick-Off
Held on 9-11 June 2010 at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC-2010), Heraklion, 30 May - 3 June 2010
This conference included a public presentation session entitled "News from the Front: Latest Results from EU projects", which took place on June 2nd. The e-LICO project was one of the 11 EU FP7 projects presented in this session and in the matchmaking session that followed.
Workshop on Inductive Reasoning and Machine Learning for the Semantic Web
Held on 31 May in conjunction with ESWC-2010. Melanie Hilario gave give an invited talk on "Optimizing the Knowledge Discovery Process through Semantic Meta-Mining" at this workshop, which was co-organized by Agnieszka Lawrynowicz (PUT).
e-LICO Extension Negotiation Meeting
In the framework of FP7-ICT Call 5, a proposal was submitted to extend the e-LICO consortium to 3 institutions from the Enlarged Europe. This proposal has been retained for funding by the EC, and a negotiation meeting took place on 24 March 2010 in Luxembourg. The three new partners are the Josef Stefan Institute (Ljubljana, Slovenia), the Rudjer Boskovic Institute (Zagreb, Croatia) and the Poznan University of Technology (Poznan, Poland).
e-LICO Annual Review
The first annual review of the e-LICO project was held on 23 March 2010 in Luxembourg.
Taverna Training Course
Katy Wolstencroft of the University of Manchester organized a hands-on training course on the Taverna workflow editor and enactor for interested e-LICO participants. The course took place on 3-4 March 2010 in INSERM, Toulouse.
Training Course on the Medicel Integrator Platform
Medicel organized a 2-day training course on the Medicel Integrator Platform for biological research on 3-4 March 2010 in the company premises in Helsinki. The course was attended not only by e-LICO biological partners but also by data miners involved in biological data mining.
e-LICO Project Meeting
This technical and management meeting took place on 3-4 November at the University of Manchester, School of Computer Science, Kilburn Building, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL.
KUP Ontology Day
Held at the University of Manchester on 2 November 2009, this event gathered e-LICO partners involved in the development of the KUP ontology as well as clinicians, biologists and bioinformaticians from the EuroKUP Cost Action.
Third EuroKUP Working Group Meeting

An e-LICO delegation headed by INSERM participated in this EuroKUP event to ensure involvement of KUP specialists in collaborative EuroKUP/e-LICO activities, in particular the development of a specialized ontology and database.

European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles of Knowledge Discovery (ECML/PKDD 2009)
This is the premier conference on machine learning and knowledge discovery in Europe. The 2009 edition took place on 7-12 September in Bled, Slovenia. The University of Geneva team presented two papers on multiple kernel learning and feature weighting -- issues directly related to mining multi-omic, high-dimensional data from multiple sources.

Two e-LICO papers were accepted for this workshop held in conjunction with ECML/PKDD on 7 September 2009. The University of Zurich and Rapid-I presented e-LICO Protégé-Based Planning and the Data Mining Workflow Ontology, while the University of Geneva team discussed the Data Mining Ontology for Algorithm Selection and Meta-Learning.
